Voices of Otis College of Art and Design: Jenny Suk

Like I've said time and time again; I Love Song Covers . I've always appreciated an artist's ability to take something that already exists in one specific state and reinterpret it.

So it shouldn't come as a surprise when I confess that I have a YouTube account with hundreds of subscriptions to cover artists. Fortunately, this helps out with Unheard Undergrad because a lot of these artists actively create original content and some are even in the works of putting out albums, mixtapes, EP's ... what have you.

Jenny Suk, 20, is a YouTube sensation once hidden behind the shadow of her (the last I checked) boyfriend, AJ Rafael who is also a Youtube sensation.

I first learned about Jenny through AJ Rafael's YT page ... and I'm not going to lie, I wasn't feeling it. I never doubted her talent, but there was always something missing.

It wasn't until I started watching videos that she posted herself that I was really pulled into her work. Her individual artistry was definitely more distinct in videos that she recorded, uploaded and set up herself. In videos covering songs with other artists she somehow falls in the background, even with a voice superior to some of theirs.

Her most recent cover of Do It Like A Dude by Jessie J erased any doubts that I may have originally had.

Suk's cover takes a raw and edgy song, gets rid of the rawness and somehow stays edgy. It's a keyboard backed track, which Suk handles herself.

No questions asked; this cover is tight.

The quality of her voice gives you exactly what this rendition of Jessie J's track needs.

I'll include the cover below. Also make sure to check out some of her original tracks and other covers. --> Here.
