Voices of Lehigh University: Divine Rhyme

When it comes time to discuss college rappers, it's only fair that I start with artists with a foundation deeply rooted in my own school; Lehigh University.

Divine Rhyme is a rap duo atypical of the contemporary sounds being heard throughout hip hop today. Divine Rhyme, which consists of Sir Sheck and Jahizzi, has a style reminiscent of old school 90's hip hop with beats distinctly mimicking the infusion of jazz and hip hop that was so common back in the day. Their lyrical style only furthers this comparison, they lack the aggression that seems to be so present today and rather allow their words to speak for themselves without forcing their message on to you.

Two years ago the rap duo, very early on in their career, opened for The Roots at Lehigh University's Annual Concert; Sundaze. They currently have three singles out; Everyday, Summer Nights (Livin' the Life) and Worldwide. Their tracks have reached websites like FreshNewTracks.com and HypeM. These tracks threaten the mainstream hip hop game. Their flow is unquestionably smooth and gets any listener on their feet. Try to listen to their song without saying, "Damn that was good."

They also have a new project that they're working on under a separate group, The Northern Lights, which departs from the style that their singles are so rich with and creates a new sound more in line with main stream hip hop. The Northern Lights consist of Divine Rhyme as well as singer Ricki Lavi.

When listening to their music I think of: Eric B and Rakim, Tribe Called Quest, Blackstar, Lupe Fiasco
Their music is best listened to when: You're relaxing, looking for something to think about, want to be enlightened, or you're just looking for something to "bump" your head to.
I would recommend this music to: College students, fans of 90's hip hop, anyone who appreciates contemporary sounds of Lupe Fiasco, Kid Cudi and Cunninlynguists.
