Voices of NYU: Fortune Family

These guys have a background worth mentioning. Reef and Hobson, the hip hop duo raised in Philly, met in high school and put their musical talents together to create Fortune Family. Reef went on to become a Sterny (attends Stern Business School at NYU) and yet continues to put tracks down with Hobson, who takes care of the beats and provides some vocal and lyrical flow.

They recently dropped a new mixtape, Paradox EP. They sample songs by artists like Lupe Fiasco (Dumb it Down) and Collie Buddz. But more importantly, they have other college artists like Hoodie Allen and OnCue featured on several of the tracks.

As clear as it is that this is college level rap I would not call it Frat Rap in any sense. It contains much more intricacy than most college songs, it is not anthem material, which is a compliment with regards to quality of music. It's better than that. The music combines indie and 90's beats with twists of jazz and smooth and mellow vocals.

They definitely have a Divine Rhyme feel (especially since Fortune Family is made up of a white boy and an Egyptian and Divine Rhyme is a white boy and a Persian), but I can honestly say Fortune Family is much smoother around the edges. Their flow is conversational and yet still gets a message across. The best thing about them is that I know for a fact, I can hear in their music, that they have so much more to give.

Dat Piff put up their mixtape so peruse and enjoy these tracks. Good music. Keep your eye out for this group. Big things, I promise.

Also check out their interview with Fab4 Music.

When listening to their music I think of: Lupe Fiasco, Kinetics and One Love, Beats like Gorilla Warfare Tactics
Their music is best listened to when: you're chilling, looking to feel enlightened
I would recommend this music to: college kids with a good ear for music, fans of Hoodie Allen and OnCue, Lupe Fiasco and Kid Cudi fans.
