Voices of the Day: RE:GENERATION

Personally, I'm very excited about the RE:GENERATION project, a documentary that pairs DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, Skrillex, The Crystal Method and Pretty Lights with other established genres to create something completely new.

So far I've had the chance to listen to DJ Premier's project featuring Nas and the Berklee Symphony Orchestra, the title track; Regeneration. The song they've created has both flair and drama, nodding at modern classical music but pushing on it with urban rhythms. The juxtaposition creates a fabulous tension that demonstrates the technique involved in both genres. It would be very interesting to see this track performed live, though I'm not sure an audience would know how to behave.

Take a listen:

I'm also very excited about Skrillex's work with members of The Doors in Break'n a Sweat. Skrillex's characteristic synthed-out lines almost overwhelm The Doors' melodies, however they each manage to establish a distinctive sound at various points in the song. Even a small section of Light My Fire serves well keep a sense of classic rock present. This song may not appeal to The Doors' initial fan base, but for people like me (who grew up on classic rock), it is the perfect mix.

I haven't explored the other tracks yet, but this is definitely a promising start, check out the rest:

Pretty Lights; Wayfaring Stranger feat. Leann Rimes and Dr. Ralph

The Crystal Method: I'm Not Leaving feat. Martha Reeves and the Funk Brothers

Mark Ronson: A La Modeliste feat. Erykah Badu, Trombone Shorty, Mos Def, Zigaboo Modeliste, and members of the Dap Kings

SO COOL!
