Voices of the Day: Lupe Fiasco

On Thanksgiving day Lupe Fiasco gave us something amazing to be thankful for; Friend of the People (though the timing of the release has more than one intention). This mixtape works with samples from incredible artists making dream team collaborations when paired up with Lupe's infallible rapping.

There are a few I'd like to highlight; we have Glitch Mob's track Bad Wings sampled on Supercold, bringing their synthed-out, repetitive intensity and eerie melodies to support slower, deliberate verses from Fiasco. The End of the World takes its themes from M83's indie-pop beats, creating an uptempo contrast for the track. There's also Kaskade and Skrillex's Lick It, sampled on SNCLSH In Vegas, which works perfectly with Lupe's agile flow. He bounces artfully off the heavy electro beat, using it to his advantage to drive the track.

As the name Friend of the People implies, Lupe is working diligently in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Music is a powerful motivator, and dropping such a politically changed collection on an all American holiday is an interesting move. Take a close listen to Lupe Back to hear his opinions...it's definitely one way to be heard.

Seriously, download Friend of the People right Here.

I was lucky enough to see Lupe Fiasco perform live at the Sweetlife festival in Maryland last spring. I'll say it, he's SICK.
